A great six club play set for the golfer who wants to test his skills with hickory clubs as used in the 1920’s compared with today’s modern clubs.

The set comprises of a ‘lofted’ Driver, Mid Iron, Mashie, Mashie Niblick, Niblick and a Putter. All the clubs have been professionally restored to play condition offering a good range of lofts and swing weights. The wood and four irons have been fitted with new matching light tan hide grips whilst the putter has been fitted with light brown period grip, all whipped with black waxed linen thread which has then been lightly coated with shellac for added protection.

Gents 4 Iron Play Set

Details 

Four good irons fully restored are now ready for play including a Mid Iron, Mashie, Mashie Niblick and Niblick with lofts ranging from 27° to 55°. The mid iron has a swing weight of D3 with the others being D5.

The heads have been cleaned, polished and the bottom edges re cut to remove old stone dint marks. Matching light beige hide grips have been fitted whipped with black waxed linen thread.

Wm. Gibson (Kinghorn) 41 degree solid rustless large headed 'Kompakta' Patent Mashie Niblick c.1925

Details 

A superb large headed mashie niblick by this famous club maker. This club is in great condition ready for play.  The swing weight is C8 and the length is 36” (91cm).

The shaft is labelled (Gibson Supra Hickory) with the words ‘Patent Applied For’ shown alongside the label. The stamps to the head are very clear showing the makers name, famous ‘Star’ cleekmark, model name ‘Kompakta’ and Made in Scotland. The sole is also stamped with the No. 6 and Solid Rustless.

Charles Tuck (Nuneaton G.C.)  46 degree Ladies LEFT HAND Niblick c.1925

Details 

A good left handed niblick for the lady player. The swing weight is C0 and the length is 36.25” (92cm).

This was obviously a popular club for the original owner as the face pattern is quite worn in parts, please refer to the images. However according to records the famous Henry Cotton carried out a test with regard to back spin using a smooth face iron, a line faced iron and a dot punched face and according to the results he said the difference between the patterned faced clubs and the smooth face club was negligible.

Harry Cawsey 51 strong Niblick c.1915

Details 

For the player who likes a strong powerful niblick then this club may be for you. The swing weight is D9 and the length is 36” (91cm).

Harry Cawsey was the professional & club maker at Seacroft G.C., Skegness from 1909-32.. His name stamp on the head has virtually worn away but is clearly stamped to the shaft just beneath the grip. Other stamps on the head show an arrow pointing towards the toe which means that the head was supplied by James Anderson of Anstruther. Niblick is faintly stamped along the bottom.

Tom Morris (St. Andrews) Ladies 34 'Long' Mashie c.1915

Details 

A very nice ladies Mashie from the ‘Autograph’ range produced after the great man’s passing has been fully restored ready for play. The swing weight is B9 and the length is 37.75” (96cm) so this iron may suit the taller lady player.

The stamp marks are very clear showing the Tom Morris autograph cleek mark, his name and L Mashie. These heads for the Autograph irons were supplied mainly by Brodie & Sons and sometimes by Tom Stewart. This head is from Brodie & Sons, their upside down triangle cleekmark is stamped beneath Mashie.  The club was originally supplied to Finnigans who were a large retailer having stores in London, Manchester & Liverpool. Their name is also shown.

T.B. Whitehead (Ilford)  55 large headed Niblick c.1912

A great iron for the bunker having 55° face loft similar to a modern day Sand Wedge. The swing weight is D3 and the length is 36.50” (93cm) so should suit the taller player.

The head is simply stamped T.B. Whitehead who was the professional & club maker at Ilford G.C., Essex from 1908-14. Niblick is also stamped.

W.Y. Winton 31 degree Junior Musselback Mid Iron c.1920

A very nice musselback mid iron for the budding junior player. The club has been restored back to play condition. The length is 35” (89cm).

The head is clearly stamped with the makers name, plus the letters A.W.E. presumably belonging to the original owner.

Frank Taylor (Freshwater Bay, I.O.W.) scare-neck longnose wooden head Putter c.1930

Details 

A late elegant scare neck long-nose putter which has been beautifully restored to a high standard including the fitting of a new rams horn sole insert held in place by three wooden plugs and the re fitting of the long lead back weight. This club is now ready for play or display. The length is 35” (89cm).

Frank Taylor was the professional & club maker at the Freshwater Bay G.C. on the Isle of White from 1920 to 1938. His name is clearly stamped to the crown.

Ben Sayers rustless 'Gruvsol' Benny Putter c.1925

A very nice example of this much sought after putter now fully restored is ready for a play set. The length is 33” (84cm).

The head has great stamp markings showing the makers name, his ‘Robin’ cleekmark, Patent No.244928, Benny Putter Registration No.718956, Made in Scotland Hand Forged. The centre of the face is also stamped with his name within the dot punched pattern. The sole has the patented ‘Gruvsol’ ridges.

Robert T. Jones/Spalding Kro-Flite rustless 'Calamity Jane' Putter c.1925                ity Jane'

A fabulous example of this highly collectable bent neck style putter which has been beautifully restored for play or display. The length is 33.75” (86cm).

The head is clearly stamped with the famous Robert T. Jones autograph and the model name Calamity Jane with the makers name Spalding and their Kro-Flite cleekmark alongside.

The Thistle Golf Co.  'Thistle Brand' bevelled toe & heel Putter c.1915

Details 

A very nice and stylish bevelled toe & heel putter produced by The Thistle Golf Company who were a subsidiary within the Charles L. Millar group of golf club manufacturers based in Glasgow. The length is 33” (84cm).

The head shows various stamp markings to include The Thistle Golf Co (albeit rather feint), the thistle brand cleekmark, warranted hand forged and an arrow pointing towards the toe.  The face is also stamped with a multi dot pattern in the shape of half a ball.

An ‘exaggerated’ bent neck putter with a thick smooth face blade designed by the five times Open Champion who was a partner with George Cann forming the club making business of Cann & Taylor.

Thornton & Co Ltd (Edinburgh) 11.5 large persimmon head Driver fitted with a stiff shaft c.1915

A very attractive large persimmon head driver featuring a broad deep red strike band with the makers name stamped within in gold lettering. The swing weight is D1 and the length is 43.25” (110cm).

Thornton & Co Ltd were a successful golf ball manufacturer based in Edinburgh towards the end of the 19th century who also began to sell golf clubs and accessories from various manufacturers through their store in Edinburgh and other branches around the UK. They started to commission their own line of clubs c.1895 continuing to do so until around 1913.

Charles Whitcombe 12 degree large headed Driver c.1925

A beautifully restored large headed driver is now ready for play. The swing weight is D5 and the length is 43.25” (110cm).

Charles Albert Whitcombe was born on 21st September 1895 in Berrow, Burnham-on-Sea. He was the second of three brother who were all successful professional golfers. He won many tournaments and was Captain of the Ryder Cup side four times. He was the professional-club maker at Marlborough Golf Club in 1922 before moving to Landsdowne, Bath in 1923 to 1925 and finally Crews Hill, London from 1926 to 1932. His name is clearly stamped to the crown of the head.

James Forrester joined his renowned father’s (George) club making business in 1903 and later opened a London retail outlet. The head is stamped Forrester JUNR.

Edwin Bradbeer was the professional & club maker at Pontypridd G.C. near to Cardiff, South Wales from 1903 to 1911 before joining Cirencester in 1914 until 1928. The wood was made whilst he was at Pontypridd, his name and club are stamped to the crown of the head.

Ted Ray 12.5 degree Ladies large headed Driver with a shallow face c.1920

A beautiful ladies shallow face driver fully restored is now ready for play. The swing weight is C5 and the length is 42.25” (107cm).

Ted Ray won the Open Championship in 1912 and the US Championship in 1920. He was not a prolific club maker so his clubs are quite rare. He is mainly remembered for his association with the Standard Golf Company where he teamed up to produce their famous Ray-Mills aluminium head putter which became a vastly popular model. He was the professional & club maker at various golf clubs including Jersey (1900), Churston, Devon (1900-02), Scarborough G.C., Ganton, Yorkshire (1904-11) and finally Oxhey G.C., Watford, Herts from 1912 to 1932.
